Overview

I happened to pass Albert's Schloss on my travels and made a quick note of the wheelchair access from outside. One thing I've found as a wheelchair rugby player is that beer halls are one of the few places we can be sure we'll get into. They're generally big open spaces, and Albert's Schloss is no different. I met up with a friend who is also a wheelchair user. We found the staff to be very accommodating and more than happy to move chairs. The food was great and the selection of beer is unmatched in the city.

Transport & Parking

3

Parking isn't great in the area. You might find some on-street parking locally but I'd suggest taking the tram or the bus – particularly if you're having a beer or two! The nearest tram stop is the Town Hall/Victoria Square stop. You'll also find bus routes on Great Charles Street and Summer Row. The nearest train station is Birmingham New Street, which is less than half a mile away

Access

2

There are two heavy doors at the entrance, which has level access from the street, but staff are on hand to open them. The venue was easy to navigate, but we did go earlier in the evening. When it's busier, it may be more of a challenge. We were given printed menus, and as the bar had no lowered section, the staff were happy to bring us drinks. Sadly, there are no alternative communication formats or a hearing loop at the venue. This, combined with the lack of a lowered bar area, is the reason for the lower score, as there could be more access features. A live band was performing when we attended. They were great, but this is a sensory consideration to keep in mind.

Toilets

3

The venue has one accessible toilet. Look for the light-up sign marked Toiletten at the rear of the room, opposite the main entrance. Entering through the archway, you'll see the door to the accessible toilet on your right. The door to the accessible toilet opens outwards and requires a RADAR key to access. There is space for a left-side transfer. There is a bin, but it's side on, meaning it doesn't obstruct the space. The toilet seat and grabrails contrast well against the toilet bowl and the white tiled walls. The red cord is on your right when seated and hangs to the floor. The sink has a small basin and a lever-style tap, it also features the same contrasting rails on either side. The toilet could easily accommodate a powerchair user and another person. The toilet also has a baby change table.
