    Disabled access roman ruins

Despite claiming to be disabled access the entire site most definitely is not. The only type of disability device capable of moving around these sites as a strong large wheeled electric buggy. Forget anything smaller, or hand driven conventional wheelchairs, pushed or self driven. From the Paphos harbour entrance access is great. Once inside the site you are faced with a steep line of steps with a disabled ramp to the right, a stony rough track and very steep in its final 50% onto a rocky plateau where all smooth surfaces cease. There is no clear way to access the pedestrian pavement at the top of those stairs as you'll have to lift your device over a short wall. The Visitors Centre is a must visit but again, no real disabled access. I use a folding Luggie and that pavement is very rough, access into the Visitors Centre very bad, despite a guide inside who never came out of his desk area to set up the provided ramps, just watching us struggle, so we gave up and headed back down to the entrance as impossible to traverse further. This is NOT a disabled friendly location. Back to the entrance we saw a extended golf buggy with a proper disabled ramp, with a girl sat inside on her mobile. Obviously provided for disabled, however, the back wheel was nearly flat, and when asked she wasn't bothered about assisting anyone, so we left the site, well pi$$ed off, for a look around the harbour area, which is excellently paved throughout. The Cyprus authorities should be ashamed of themselves, claiming disabled access, as we study Roman history and specifically wanted to enjoy these amazing ruins. With minimal investment and a bit of effort this could be easily made into a properly disabled friendly experience. Only good news is, as we're both over 65 there's no entrance fee of oldies...

Well worth the effort required to get around

It is over 23 years since we last visited this site. Then I could walk but on this visit I was using my trusted old wheelchair. Our first surprise was that we only paid for one – I presume my wife got in for nothing as my career. Armed with a map of the park, off we went, armed with the map supplied. I would be lying if I said all of the paths were smooth. Some were easier navigated than others but there was a few ‘wheelchair shaking’ moments. That said, I am grateful for my wife’s perseverance we managed to get to visit the ‘House of Aion’, where we saw an informative video presentation, The House of Dionysos’, where there was a good walkway to go around to view the mosaic decorations. Outside we were able to go past of near most of the other areas of interest. Bearing in mind the age of this site, effort has been made to accommodate the disabled visitor, including an accessible toilet at the entrance.
