Lovely Clyde views from the parking area but walk fairly inaccessible

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Walking Aid, Wheelchair

Overview

Living locally, we know that the walk is not suitable for wheelchair users but accept that not everywhere can be made accessible. The area is worth a visit to park or sit outside looking out over the Clyde. It is an easy drive from Helensburgh.

Transport & Parking

The area is accessed by a narrow unsignposted road which is a very sharp left turn off the A814 if you are coming from the Cardross/Dumbarton side. It s soon after the entrance to Ardardan Estate and can be spotted because there is a solitary house just at the turn. The road downhill to the parking (maybe half a mile?) goes over a level crossing. There is not very much parking, a few spots end on to the road and the rest alongside it. There are no marked bays. The parking is tarmac.

Access

We go to enjoy the view and the birds that can be seen from the parking area. There is a footpath that goes right round the point for more the able bodied. It used to stop part way round but now goes all the way. It is accessed through a five bar gate which might open with a bit of effort but there is so much grass in front of it that I doubt a wheelchair could easily go over it. A mobility scooter might, if users don't mind a bit of bumping. Those who use a stick would be able to access the narrow entrance to the left of the gate. Once in,the path is fairly bumpy as stones have been laid in the earth to make it less muddy. Later in the season there is an abundance of wildflowers. According to online information many different species of birds can be seen. This is very much a natural beauty spot with no seats or facilities. We take our own seats and a flask.

Toilets

0

There are no toilets but accessible toilets can be found at Ardardan (see my previous review) at Morrisons just as you go into Helensburgh and beside the pier in Helensburgh (though you have to guess that that is what the white building is, as there is no obvious sign.) All these have a drop down rail and a horizontal wall mounted rail. The public toilets by the pier are accessed by a RADAR key.
