Overview
Bexley station is a small commuter station that has recently been renovated to include lifts and a walk bridge to each platform. The station provides transport to most stations in central London and some in the northern area of Kent via Southeastern and Thameslink trains. This station is my local station and since they have made the improvements, I've had great service. However, I still face the regular problems that I face when travelling by train, with ensuring assistance is actually going to be there and also traveling within the manned hours where possible. Bexley Station is my local station, and since the renovation, I have overall had a very good experience and it's great to be able to travel via my local station more regularly. I have broken down the below into clear headings for clarity
Transport & Parking
Parking There is substantial parking available. There is over 7 blue badge bays, which blue badge users can use for free at any time. Although, it's worth noting where the blue badge bays are situated there is a slight gradient which may be difficult for wheelchair users or those with low mobility/balance. There's also lots of standard parking available, at a charge. You can purchase parking in the station, at the ticket machine or using their online system - Apcoa. There is 4 bus routes available outside the station on the main road travelling between Greenwich, Thamesmead, Bexleyheath and Queen Mary's Hospital. The nearest bus stop is up a small hill.
Access
The road entrance from the main road The entrance road to the station from the main road does not have a pavement. This road also has quite a steep gradient. Main entrance When entering the main entrance from the car park there is a tactile drop cub at the centre of the main entrance. The main entrance is wide enough for most wheelchair users as there is plenty of space. Once you've entered the main entrance, you'll be met with the ticket barriers where zonal contactless payments are available. Alternatively, this is where the ticket office is located and where you will find the staff on duty. The ticket office window is low, making it easier to communicate if you are a wheelchair user or a person of short stature. There is also a small cafe located to the right hand side of the main entrance when entering from the car park. There is no seating available at the cafe but a wide selection of hot or cold drinks and snacks. The side entrance. There is a smaller side entrance the left of the main entrance from the car park where there is again a contactless payment point available. The side entrance is wide enough for most wheelchairs and is level with minimal gradient. However, there is a slightly steep drop kerb from the carpark to the side entrance. Lifts and footbridge There is a large lift at both ends of the footbridge. There is a large call button for both lifts and Braille is also available. Within the lift there are large operating buttons with Braille, as well as an emergency call button. The footbridge between both platforms is level and smooth. However, there is no grab rail between the level parts of the footbridge. When on the platform. When on the platform, emergency contact points are available on both platforms. The platforms are fairly level with minimal gradient.
Toilets
There is a accessible toilet available with a radar key lock, however, this is behind doors which are locked (not radar key) and when visiting twice recently, staff were unavailable to open the doors to access the accessible toilet.
Staff
The staff that I've met when travelling from the station were very nice and accommodating. My only frustration is the limited manned hours available at this station. The staffing can also be a bit inconcistent. I have put some general information below in regards to the support available at this station. Staffing hours Bexley is only manned between the below hours. Meaning should you need any assistance, you may have to pre-book, which is always recommended but not always possible. It's also worth noting that you may be supported by a mobile assist member of staff who will travel from another station to assist you. Mon - Fri: 06:10-19:30 Sat: 06:10-19:30 Sun: 08:10-15:40
Anything else you wish to tell us?
There is is a taxi service directly outside the station, should you need it.
