Overview
A truly beautiful historic Manor set in wonderful Cotswold scenery, with records of a Manor House here in 600 AD, and it seems the estate was then called Bookland. A church stands close by on the estate, dating back to the 1200 hundreds, when the Manor House was built. Under the care of Gloucester Abbey, it remained so until 1536, until the dissolution of the monasteries occurred, then the land and the manor was passed on to the Gresham family. Later, by marriage, it passed on to the Thynne family. Buckland estate was then sold in 1802, then became owned by four private families, with the house being very much altered in 1880, with further extensions in 1910. On the 4th July 1960 it was listed as a grade 11 listed building, and amended 7th September 1987. The manor stands in 10 acres of beautifully kept gardens, and features a croquet lawn and tennis courts. The hotel has elegant guest rooms, all with garden views, a fine dining restaurant, offering seasonal dishes, and Afternoon tea, ( of which we offer a review on our part 8 Cotswold tour )
