Discover all about life in Newcastle and Tyneside, from the area's renowned maritime history and world-changing science and technology right through to fashion through the eras and military history. The museum is bursting with interactive displays, which makes it the perfect place to learn and have fun. Our displays are regularly updated and complemented by an array of free, fun learning activities. One of our favourite exhibits - Turbinia - dominates the entrance to the Museum. Invented on Tyneside, it is the first ship to be powered by a steam turbine.

Great museum well worth the trip

We had a great time at this museum lots of things to see as well as interactive things to try.

Discover The History of the North East

Before Access Day 2019 I had not visited the amazing Discovery Museum in years! I was pleasantly surprised at just how accessible the venue was overall - there are always areas that can be improved, but for a free Museum in the heart of a busy city, it was a fantastic morning out. Lots of room for chairs - manual and automatic with gently sloping ramps all connecting to one central lift for access to all floors and exhibits: mostly clear signage, accessible toilets and most importantly well trained and attentive staff.

Great museum with Changing Places toilet

Discovery Museum is just outside of the city centre, it has lots of interactive displays and great accessibility throughout.

As an organisation, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums is striving to put people at the centre of museums - on both an intellectual and physical level. We are committed to ensuring that as many people have the opportunity to visit and enjoy the museums and galleries as possible. Our aim is to create a user-friendly environment which is relevant to the needs of the visitor and one which provides freedom of choice. The approach taken is much wider than simply providing facilities for disabled people. Access is for all visitors.

There is public parking just outside the entrance to the Museum. This includes disabled parking bays.

Accessible toilets are located throughout the building. Please speak to a member of staff who will show you were. These are fully accessible with automatic doors, grab handles and low sinks.

Accessible toilet

A designated accessible toilet designed for wheelchair users and others with visible and non-visible accessibility requirements is available within the main public areas.

Changing Places toilet

There is a Changing Places toilet, which includes an adult-size changing bench, toilet, sink and hoist.
