Overview
As a German, Döner has a special place in my heart. It is to me what a chippie supper would be to a Brit. Since I am now a vegetarian, I do not often get to indulge in this nostalgia, so I was over the moon to find a vegan restaurant with Döner in the name (which is also a pun)! The döner was on and not in a pita, which means my quest of finding a plant-based version of the fast food of my youth is ongoing, but it was absolutely delicious! Add to that the nicely decorated interior and the amazing staff and you get a happy Pat indeed.
Transport & Parking
Döner Summer is on Call Lane, which is next to Leeds Corn Exchange. There are bus stops on New Market Street very close-by (2, 3, 3A, 12, 13, 12A, 47, 51, 52) or slightly further in Duncan Street (5, 5A, 19, 19A, 40, 64, 74, 163). There is not much opportunity for on-street parking in the area, but Crown Street Car Park is nearby and the multi-storey car park NCP Leeds The Markets is not too far either. Leeds Bus Station is less than a 0.2/5-minute walk or wheel away. Leeds train station is a 0.4/10/minute walk or wheel from the restaurant.
Access
There is a small step up to the front door. The door is not automatic. It opens to the inside and is quite narrow. You will need to turn right after the door to get past the bar. I took quite a while to first get someone's attention and then for them to find the ramp, but eventually I was able to go in. Staff were very helpful once I was inside and moved tables and chairs around to make space for my powerchair. Most of the table have moveable chairs with backrests and no armrests. There is booth-style seating along some of the walls and a couple of bar-height tables with stools that have wrap-around backrests. I think there is more seating upstairs that I did not see. The printed menus have pretty small print, but when I asked about a larger version, they brought me a tablet with the menu (it is on the website) and I could zoom in for bigger text. The venue is dog friendly. There was a couple with a dog at the table next to me and they were offered a bowl of water for the dog.
Toilets
The toilets are upstairs, so I did not go to see them. The staff recommended the Corn Exchange for accessible toilets.
Staff
The staff was lovely and extremely accommodating. They even let me charge my powerchair and helped me figure out a way to best plug it in, which involved moving table and they did not mind at all. (It probably helped that I came in the afternoon when it was pretty quiet.)
