Overview

One of the buildings of the School of Health Sciences. A half mile from main campus so the in house cafe is appreciated. Generally good access.

Transport & Parking

Two disabled bays directly outside of building with dropped kerb at one end. Unfortunately the delivery drivers frequently use and partially block them.

Access

Entrance is step free and with powered door to one side. Atrium is light and spacious with reasonable signage. Off the atrium is the cafe which is a bight tight on space to manouever around. However the coffee and cakes are great. Also in the atrium is a large accessible lift with mirror which gives access to all floors. Corridor doors are generally held open. Doors into secure areas need cards to access and are then powered. The student social space is in the basement. Its large light and airy with a powered door to access. Many of the classroom doors are powered. The lecture theater is in the basement and is accessed by two powered doors. The top level is accessible to all. To access the front of the lecture theater you need to use a slow stair lift - key is gotten from reception at ground level. Unfortunately fire regulations limit it to one wheelchair user at the front at any one time.

Toilets

There is a disabled loo on each floor. These are large with grab rails, alarm cords and mirrors.

Staff

Staff on reception are very helpful with helping you find your way around. The cafe staff are lovely and will happily help get you your food if its too crowded to get around.

The downside of the Edith Cavell Building is that to get across to main campus you have to cross a very busy junction by a roundabout with poor sight lines, which can lead to near misses. But after that there is a lovely hard path across sports fields, a river and marshes which takes about 15 min to roll across to reach main campus (about half a mile away).
