Overview
This Changing Places Toilet has been built according to older standards so it’s not up to the most recent standards. It’s still a very well-equipped toilet and is also well maintained. It’s accessed via a RADAR key and it seemed quite busy when I went, so I do recommend knocking before entering just to be safe.
Transport & Parking
This toilet is inside a shopping centre and is located right by the entrance from the bottom floor of the car park. The car park has six levels and 31 accessible parking spaces across the second and third floors. Ilford Station is located about 320 metres from the shopping centre and there are a number of buses that stop in that same area. This includes 25, 86, 123, 128, 145, 147, 150, 167, 169, 179, 296, 364, 366, 396, 425, 462, 667, 677, 679, W19, EL1, N25, N86, SL2 (Superloop).
Access
The toilet is located on the ground floor and is right next to the main lifts. Although there isn’t much signage in the rest of the shopping centre, the signs for the toilets are large and vibrant and you can see them from far away. The toilet is accessed with a RADAR key.
Toilets
Once unlocked with a RADAR key, this door opened outwards and was fairly light. Inside, there was a horizontal grab rail fitted to make it easier to close the door from the inside. There was one coat hook on the door that was fitted high up on the door. The toilet had an adult-size, height-adjustable bench that was mounted to the wall. There was a ceiling hoist mounted too. The toilet was height-adjustable with grab rails on each side that could be raised and lowered as needed. With the grab rails raised, there was space on either side of the toilet for a left-side or right-side transfer. There was a privacy screen mounted to the wall just beside the toilet which could be folded out. The red emergency cord was also mounted just beside the toilet and was slightly hidden behind the privacy screen. While it was hanging freely to the floor, it was a bit difficult to spot at first. Had someone fallen on the other side of the privacy screen, there is a chance you may not see it at all. The sink had a large basin and was also height-adjustable. The tap was manually operated, not activated by automatic sensors. There was a wall-mounted hand dryer and paper towels. Underneath the paper towel dispenser, there was a bin which had a flap lid, this needed a small push to open. There were two other bins near the toilet which had lids which lifted up, as well as foot-operated pedals. These were hygiene waste bins that may not have been able to go in the general waste bin. There was also a large wall-mounted mirror near the door.
