Overview

Crescent Gardens caught my eye as I was passing, and I felt compelled to take a closer look. The pavilion at the centre houses a white marble statue carved by the Italian sculptor Giovanni Benzoni. The statue was originally created for the Spa Rooms Gardens in the 1870s, but was placed in storage in 1958 after the gardens were removed. After almost 30 years, it was rediscovered and ultimately installed here in 1989. The statue depicts Cupid and Psyche, two winged figures who appear to be in an embrace. The design represents the union of love (Cupid) and the soul (Psyche).

Transport & Parking

3

There is a small car park on Crescent Gardens, the confusingly named street on the opposite side of the garden from Crescent Road. The closest bus stop is 160 metres away on Ripon Street, just outside the Royal Hall, where the 3, 4, 24, 36, 59, 825, S1, S3 and X12 services operate. Harrogate railway station is half a mile away.

Access

3

There is level access to the gardens from all sides, although the route from Crescent Street has a small lip and a slight incline. The route from Crescent Gardens has a similar incline with no lip, along with several standard parking spaces. There are two wooden benches in the garden positioned opposite each other. There are no alternative formats in use and all signage is in English. The pavilion has glass windows on all sides through which the statue can be viewed. There are two steps up to it but he statue can still be seen clearly from ground level.

Toilets

0

There is an accessible toilet at this location, which I understand has a RADAR lock. I didn't use the toilet and the information I've found since suggest the toilets aren't in the best condition. I won't rate the facilities as I didn't use them.
