Interesting WW1 museum and mostly wheelchair accessible
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Assistance Dog, Wheelchair
Overview
We visited on Remembrance Sunday as part of a motorhome trip around the WW1 sites. This museum is privately owned and seems very popular. It has some good exhibits showing what various aspects of the war would have looked like and there was an excellent video that showed the movement of the various frontlines.
Transport & Parking
I had checked the website before visiting and it stated that behind the museum, there is parking for 8 motorhomes. It didn't mention that this car park is currently closed. We drove down a very narrow road to find this out and then had to turn a 7m long vehicle round. I didn't see any blue badge parking. Parking all seemed a bit hit and miss. There were a few car spaces outside but some parked on the road and coaches just pulled up outside and waited.
Access
The museum is in a building that clearly wasn't accessible from the beginning, however, they have added ramps throughout and I managed to get around 90% of the museum quite easily. Some of the ramps were too steep and I needed my husband behind me for safety. I could get to all the exhibits and read all of the information.
Toilets
There is a accessible toilet. It's not the biggest but enough room for a wheelchair to get in. In general, Belgian accessible toilets are not as functional as British ones (in my experience).
Staff
All staff were lovely. They were very helpful and pleasant.
