Venue Description

Colonies of bats may fly around the castle's twin tower houses, but legend holds that a love - struck maiden once made the perilous leap between them. Find out more as you explore the many rooms of this complete castle, which boasts a fabulous painted ceiling of the 1500s, depicting strange beasts and monsters. Opening times 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Daily, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm). Closed for lunch 12.30pm to 1pm. 1 Oct to 28 Mar: Daily except Thur and Fri, 10am to 4pm (last entry 3.30pm). Accessibility

Approach to site The visitor centre is about 12 metres from the castle, across gravel and a flat stone path. Visitor centre The visitor centre has step-free access. Monument The west tower is up 13 stone steps with an aluminium banister on one side, which leads to the Great Hall. An original spiral stair with 37 stone steps and a rope handrail, takes visitors to battlements of the west tower. The laigh hall in the east tower is accessed on the ground floor. There is a step at the entrance. Step-free access through an education area can be arranged by the steward. A stone spiral stair of 26 steps leads to the first floor. hall which has a painted ceiling. The stairs continue with 19 steps to the bedroom, then a further 18 steps to the battlements. There is a rope handrail on all these stairs. There is a walkway all around the battlements, with an uneven surface. There is also a wooden walkway of 12 steps which joins the two towers at first floor level.
