Travel around 10th century York, experiencing what it was like living in the city. The sights, sounds and even the smells of the Viking Age are brought vividly back to life as you journey back 1,000 years. At JORVIK Viking Centre you are standing on the site which revealed some of the most astounding discoveries in modern archaeology. Get up-close with some of the most beautiful and rare Viking artefacts in the world, from delicate earrings and socks to frying pans and padlocks and even a fossilised Viking poo! Dig deeper into the Viking story of York using the latest in cutting-edge technology located throughout the centre and the opportunity to handle real artefacts whilst talking to our friendly Viking hosts. The Herefordshire Hoard is currently on display at JORVIK Viking Centre! Loaned to York Archaeology from Herefordshire Council, the Hoard is well known for being discovered in 2015 by metal detectorists near Leominster. It is believed that 90% of the hoard has been illicitly sold on the black market, with the perpetrators since sentenced to over 23 years in prison. The Herefordshire Hoard currently consists of 29 silver coins, unique gold jewellery, a remarkably well-preserved rock crystal pendant and a single silver ingot This incredible hoard will be available to view at JORVIK Viking Centre until Summer 2024. Entrance – flat entry into our Admissions area First Gallery – Around 20 steps with rails down to first gallery or a platform lift is available to use, which takes 2 Adults at a time, to get in and out of the building. Level Access throughout galleries with a gentle slope from last gallery up to Gift Shop steps. Doors – handles to push down & open door. Toilets – One step down to access male or female toilet doors, another step down into male or female toilets it's self. Disabled toilet is accessed via a Radar key, ask staff member in gallery for the key with flat access to toilet it’s self. Ride - slope down to the ride, a gap to get onto front of ride capsule and two steps and gap get onto back of ride capsule. A gap to get off front of ride capsule and step and gap get off back of ride capsule. Special capsule for wheelchair user which member of technical team helps them get onto the ride. Gift Shop – Around 20 steps with rails up to the Gift Shop or platform lift located in first gallery can be used to exit the building. Level access on main floor of shop and one slope and rail up to books & weaponry sections. Exit – flat entry out of Gift Shop area.

Toilets

Disabled Toilet – step free access, door is wide enough for manual wheelchair or powerchair, there is a right hand transfer space there are grab rails, a raised toilet seat, easy turn taps and a RADAR lock to the door. Please ask staff member in gallery for RADAR key.

Staff

All front of house staff are trained on the Welcome All course for awareness of disabled visitors’ specific needs. Some staff have Autism awareness training and some have guide training for Visitors with a visual impairment.
