Lovely old inn in scenic surroundings, well worth a visit for the food alone.

Overview

Booked at last minute via discount voucher site to attend a funeral. Loved the atmosphere and scenery, food was delicious . The hotel has made some attempts at making it disabled friendly, but there are several things which would make it better. We were advised via email when we booked that our room was not an accessible room, but was designed to be disabled friendly. Allocated a large room on ground floor in the annex,

Transport & Parking

4

We drove, plenty of parking, some spaces near the door, but no dedicated accessible parking . Some parking is on a hill, and ground uneven in places. Nearest train station is 14 miles away in Crianlarich, a taxi service is available. Public bus services serve Killin, but unsure if they stop near the hotel.

Access

3

Access across carpark uneven and slightly uphill. Access into hotel flat, through 2 sets of double doors, both doors need to be opened to allow wheelchair access.Between the 2 sets of doors, there is a large depressed area containing a doormat, which is impossible to avoid, my manual wheelchair got stuck in it every time. Plenty of seating inside and out to rest. Once in main part of building all public areas bar one are on the flat. Large visible reception desk, with low level desk, another set of double doors to access bar, restaurant and conservatory.Signage good.Lift to upper floors is quite old fashioned and narrow, would probably not be suited to wheelchair use, but okay for those with some mobility. No evidence of anything to assist those with hearing or visual problems. Lighting quite dark, which could be an issue for those with visual problems To access to our room in the annex we had to leave the hotel down an uneven slope and along a gravel path, which I would not have managed on my own. There was a slight ledge on entering the room which was a challenge to get over as well. The room was huge, plenty of room to manoeuvre, although we had to move the bed to allow wheelchair access. It also contained 2 sofa beds.Electric points, USB points, hospitality tray, and hangers were all accessible .

Toilets

3

Accessible loo in reception area ,easily located, entrance through 2 doors, angle looked quite tight, so did not try accessing it.Large area with plenty of room to facilitate turning. Grab rails in place, but only one at side of toilet, would benefit from a drop down rail at other side of toilet. Higher than normal toilet. No emergency assistance cord in place.Room for a carer. Bathroom in hotel room, plenty of grab rails around toilet and one at sink, higher than usual toilet. Perch stool in corner of bathroom, but shower although large was quite high to access 3-4 inches, with no grab rails, and a surface that would be very slippy when wet. No shelf in shower for toiletries, no emergency assistance cord. Could only access toilet and sink, and had to reverse chair back out of bathroom, no room to turn, and no room for carer

Staff

Staff were very friendly, helpful and approachable. They took time to assist me if I needed it , despite being extremely busy, nothing was too much trouble, they helped with doors, suggested best areas to sit, moved furniture etc, and took a general interest in our visit. .Part of breakfast was self serve , but staff were happy to help

Anything else you wish to tell us?

It's an old hotel, and some areas a bit worn round the edges, but fantastic views from the restaurant and conservatory, of the river and the surrounding hills. It’s the first hotel I’ve visited that offer you to arrange a Personal Escape Plan with reception, if you need assistance in an emergency. The hotel prides itself in being pet friendly, and dogs are allowed in the rooms, which would be a benefit for anyone with an assistance dog. The food was fresh and delicious , and plenty variety to choose from. The staff couldn't do enough for us . It was nice to be able to 'bag a bargain' online, you often feel left out if you have accessibility issues . I would definitely visit again, as long as I had a strong companion, to deal with the carpark surface and access to the rooms.
