Overview

Cannes sea front promenade, with the beach and pedestrianized walkway on one side of the street and designer shops and luxury hotels on the other side.

Transport & Parking

The train station is about a 10 minute walk away, and it's on a slight slope down from the station to the sea front. There are also a number of buses that run along La Croisette or stop nearby. Sorry unable to comment about car parking, but assume it would be expensive given the location.

Access

Cannes has a sandy beach (unlike Nice which has a pebble beach). The beach has free, public areas as well as private areas where you have to pay an admission charge to access and which have beachside restaurants. There is a free section of the beach by Palais des Festivals and there is a ramp to access it. The beach front road is lined with palm trees, which have lights round their trunks and are illuminated at night. On the beach side there is a wide, flat, pedestrianised walkway which has quite a lot of seats. Some is fixed seating but there is also the blue, metal chairs that are moveable. When I visited I found that at busy times, ie weekend and sunset, it was quite difficult to find an empty chair. It is dotted with kiosks that sell food and drink. Near Palais des Festivals is a small, children's amusement area with a couple of rides and is very family friendly, and the start of Le Petit Train de Cannes. On the opposite side of the street are the designer shops, luxury hotels and apartments. Generally La Croisette is easy to navigate as there are regular crossings from on side of the street to the other. However I did notice that occasionally there would be a drop kerb one side of the road but not on the opposite side.

Toilets

Unable to comment as I didn't use the public toilets. However when I saw signage for the toilets there was as always a wheelchair sign.

Cannes' sea front optimizes the glamour and glitz of the French Riviera with its expensive shops and luxury hotels. The sea front promenade is a great place to stroll, sit, relax and people watch. There's often also a cruise ship and private yachts on the horizon. Walking from Palais des Festivals you walk by a number of luxury hotel: The Majestic which opened in the 1920s La Malmaison which is now an art gallery which is the former tearoom for the original Grand Hotel JW Marriot with its casino InterContinental Carlton with its domes at either end, this was a film location in Alfred's Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief. In its garden is the Palme D’Or statue, a golden angel statue holding the Palme D’Or (golden palm) symbol of the Cannes Film Festival. Martinez an art deco building and was France's largest hotel when it opened in the 1920s. This is the last of the grand hotels and afterwards there are mainly luxury apartment blocks. The road continues to the Yacht Harbour. At night the palm trees are illuminated and the pavement of the walkway on the beach side is illuminated. I have to say I found the path quite dark at night.
