Overview
In addition to the Changing Places toilet (see my other review), Leeds General Infirmary and Leeds Children's Hospital also have some other disabled toilets that are accessible without a RADAR key and are close enough to the entrances to not necessitate any trips down long corridors or up and down lifts. In this review I'll describe and share photos for the disabled bathrooms on the ground floor of the Jubilee Wing and the Children's Hospital/Clarendon Wing (which is next to the Changing Places toilet).
Transport & Parking
Access to the Children's Hospital is via Belmont Grove. There is a small car park there (pay and display), four blue badge bays and space to get dropped off. The closest bus stop is Woodhouse Square (5 Electric). The 5 Electric also stops at LGI A&E on Clarendon Way, which is closest to the Jubilee Wing entrance and at Civic G for the entrance at the Brotherton Wing. There is also a multi-storey car park on Clarendon Way close to the Jubilee entrance. There is a small roundabout by the entrance itself with limited parking -- 4 blue badge bays -- but it is mostly for drop-off and pick-up.
Access
Everywhere I went was accessible without steps thanks to ramps and lifts. The doors at the main entrances are automatic. There is seating in the lobbies close to the main entrances and some benches outside the Jubilee entrance. There is a hearing loop at the Jubilee reception. I did not see any Braille or tactile markings. There are white on blue signs above head height to show you the way. The jubilee wing has five lifts, the Clarendon Wing/Children's hospital has two.
Toilets
Jubilee Wing: The toilets are past/to the left of reception. There is a small accessible bathroom on the right side of the little hallway. The door opens to the outside right. No key is needed to access the bathroom. There is no door opener. The handle on the outside is a lever. There is a handrail on the back of the door and it locks with an extended twist lever. There is a horizontal handrail to the left of the toilet that can be lifted and moved out of the way and a fixed horizontal handrail on the wall to the right of the toilet. The flush is a lever on the wall on the left above the toilet. The toilet paper holder and a colostomy shelf are to the right of the toilet. There is space for a right-side transfer. The red cord is to the right of the toilet. There are vertical handrails on either side of the sink. The sink is a small wall-mounted sink, but there is a built-in box below it. The tap has a longish lever. There is a liquid soap dispenser above the sink but no mirror. There is a paper towel dispenser on the wall left of the sink and a foot pedal bin with a groove in the lid below it. There is another shelf in the corner above the bin and a long mirror on the wall to the left when you enter. There is also a sanitary bin to the left of the toilet and a hand dryer on the wall to the right when you enter. Children's Hospital: If entering from Belmont Grove/Leeds Children's hospital, go all the way to the back of the lobby and then go down the corridor on the left. The disabled toilet as well as the Changing Places bathroom will be in a nook on your left. There is a sign overhead to show you when to turn left. The door opens to the outside right. No key is needed to access the bathroom. There is no door opener. The handle on the outside is a lever. The door locks with a twist lever. The toilet is on the back wall. There is a vertical handrail on the wall and a horizontal handrail to the right of the toilet that can be lifted and moved out of the way and a fixed horizontal handrail on the wall to the left of the toilet. The flush is a lever on the wall above the toilet on the right side. The toilet paper holder is to the left of the toilet. To the right there are a colostomy shelf and a narrow sanitary bin with foot pedal. There is space for a left-side transfer. The red cord is to the right of the toilet. The sink is on the right wall. There are vertical handrails on either side of the sink. The sink is a small wall-mounted sink, but there is a pedestal built below. The tap has a short lever. There is a soap dispenser above the sink on the right and a paper towel dispenser above the sink to the left. There is a large foot pedal bin to the right of the door as you come in.
Staff
I was there in the late afternoon, so the reception was not staffed anymore.
