Overview
Lochwinnoch Railway Station is a small two-platform station through which services to Glasgow and Ayrshire run. As a station, it's not much to look at, and there is only one accessible parking space nearby. The main reason to visit is for the local Loch Semple, a mile away, which has accessible watersports at certain times of the year and is generally a nice scenic place to visit.
Transport & Parking
There is one accessible parking space at the station, conveniently located closest to the platform. It's marked in such a way as to allow you to open a car door on both sides, which is better than most I see at small train stations. A drop-off bay is available and clearly marked. It's important to note that if you're unable to manage stairs, there is only one platform you can board at - platform 1, which is the Glasgow-bound line. There's a bus stop close to platform 1 where you'll find the 307 and 307A in operation, to and from Johnstone Train Station.
Access
For step-free access, you will need to go down into the car park from the main road. The path is paved. From the car park, there is an incline. I managed it in a manual wheelchair with a bit of effort. There are two ways onto the platform. The route on the right has a ticket machine. It is under cover but set on a plinth, so you have to reach in to use it. The PIN pad is quite high and a bit awkward, but the contactless reader is easy enough to reach from a seated position. On the platform, there is tactile paving along the edge, a few tap-in and tap-out machines, and help points on both sides. The station is unstaffed, but there is a passenger assist meeting point on each platform if you have arranged support. Each platform has a bench and a rain shelter with metal seating. Only platform 1 is accessible. From here, you can catch trains to Paisley and Glasgow. Platform 2 is for trains to Largs, Ardrossan, Ayr and Stranraer. If you end up over there, the only way out is by stairs, which is a bit of a pain. Where there are stairs, the edges are clearly marked with tactile strips at the top and bottom, and handrails are in place. The ScotRail website mentions a hearing loop. I could not see where it was located, but it might be near the assistance tannoy or close to the passenger assist point.
