Overview
Stumbling upon Mokoko Coffee & Bakery was a happy accident. After an event in Bristol, a colleague and I needed a spot for a wee pick-me-up that wasn't too far from Bristol Temple Meads. I enjoyed a heavenly hazelnut pastry and an iced latte that did my soul good. My colleague had a refreshing fruit juice and a cookie that they seemed to like. The café is spacious where it matters but let down a little by the accessible toilet and the issues to be addressed there. However, if you're looking for a little treat, head to Mokoko!
Transport & Parking
The closest bus stop is on Avon Street, just behind the café, with the 16 and 61 services running from there. Bristol Temple Meads Station is about a five-minute walk from the café and has additional bus stops and a taxi rank. On-street parking is available along Avon Street and there's a long-stay car park at the station. However, I didn’t spot any designated accessible parking spaces nearby. There’s also a ferry stop across the water, though it isn’t wheelchair accessible. It has handrails on either side of the stairs and a sheltered seating area for those able to use it.
Access
There is level entry to the café from the street through a set of double doors that were pinned open on our arrival. The service counter is straight ahead as you enter, with seats on the left side of the building. We moved some wooden chairs to get our wheelchairs in to the table, but there was enough room to see the produce, order and get to our table without issue. The counter does not have a lowered section but they brought the card reader over to me when I was paying. There's nothing in the way of signage but the open layout makes things easy to find. For those who prefer to eat al fresco, there are seats outside. There were no alternative formats in use and no hearing loop at this location.
Toilets
The door to the toilet opens outwards and doesn't require a RADAR key. The door is secured from the inside by lifting a small handle, beneath which is a button with Braille markings advising to lock the door. There is space for a left-side transfer to the toilet but there's a large bin in the way, which makes it pretty much pointless. The toilet does not have a contrasting seat but does have grabrails on either side. The small sink has a lever-style tap and rails on either side. The red emergency cord was tied and knotted around the left-side rail. The hand dryer is to the right of the sink. The toilet is small but can accommodate a powerchair user and a second person if needed.
Staff
The staff were helpful and offered to bring our food and drinks to us, which was a nice touch!
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I fixed the red cord when I was in the toilet, but it's disappointing to encounter this so often in venues. They are first and foremost a safety feature, but are useless if they can't be reached.
