Overview

Good access, delicious food and cocktails, lovely staff, reasonably priced - all in a bonny (ex bank) setting

I got a taxi, which could drop off in the bay right outside (in front of the taxi rank). Loads of buses to Princes Street (and the tram) and buses to Hanover Street too.

Access

There are steps up to the front door, but prior research on the website had told me "Our Edinburgh restaurant is fully accessible. Please ring the bell at the base of the steps to gain access to our wheelchair accessible lift" so I thought it would be fine. But there was no bell to ring, despite the sign which advised "ring bell for entry"! UPDATE 24/9/23 - an email from Mowgli told me that a bell has now been installed - and the spies that I sent in this weekend confirmed it :) Once the lift takes you up the stairs they have to stick a couple of ramp wedges down to get you up the final step, which they didn't seem very practised at, but I'm sure they'll get better. Once in the dining room there's lots of room to manoeuvre, and the tables are solid enough to lean on/pull yourself up. A little bit dim (much like me) and pretty noisy when we first got there, but I quickly managed to tune that out.

You can see the door from everywhere in the dining room - great for those who get anxious about being able to find the loo quickly. Nice wide door. Lock is a big lever, so easy to use if you aren't very dextrous. Loads of room inside. Several grab rails, a red cord (and a cancel button) and one of those pull-down rails beside the loo. And hallelujah - the sink is lowered for easier use by someone on wheels. Flat lever to flush the loo - another point there. Nice soap. The only thing I'm knocking off half a point for is that the hand dryer is on the opposite wall from the sink, so you have to totter about with wet slippy hands to get to it.

Staff

Very nice in general, although I really thought the guy who thought that my pointing out the lack of the bell to summon the lift (NOW INSTALLED) was "useful feedback" didn't understand why it was a problem. D'oh!

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The place is really pretty, and my photos don't do it justice. The street food lived up to my (high) expectations - particularly the treacle tamarind fries and the rhubarb and ginger dal. Try the ginger and coriander g & t - delish!

This is how it looks when you drive on to it at the top - lip up to stop you rolling off Terribly unflattering action shot. The lift goes down and then turns to the left. Note that both 'lips' are up to stop me rolling off. Terribly unflattering action shot. The lift goes down and then turns to the left. Note that both 'lips' are up to stop me rolling off. Terribly unflattering action shot. The lift goes down and then turns to the left. Note that both 'lips' are up to stop me rolling off. The 'lip' is down so that you can drive on, then it lifts up to stop you rolling off (great because my brakes are rubbish). Kind of hard to see, but there's a rail to hold on to when you take off. It's actually so much prettier than my photos make it look - sparkly gold lamps everywhere. Oh and that's the accessible loo straight ahead Mowgli Street Food
