The Threepenny Opera: By Bertolt Brecht & Kurt Weill

Friday 21 February – Saturday 8 March

This classic from the writer of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, The Caucasian Chalk Circleand Mother Courage is a story of the dispossessed and the downtrodden and has never been more relevant. Brought bang up-to-date and given an anarchic twist, this exciting new production is a reinvention of a classic through the casting of Deaf, disabled and non-disabled actors. Imagine a world where evil goes unpunished and lowly souls remain on the poverty line. London’s most notorious criminal, Macheath, has recently married Polly, the daughter of Jonathan Peachum, leader of the beggars. All performances of The Threepenny Opera include audio description and incorporate a creative combination of BSL and captioning which has been developed alongside the rehearsals and is integral to the show. This allows Deaf audiences to access the wit, satire and anarchy of Brecht and Weill’s script and lyrics, including interpretations of well know songs such as Mack the Knife. An audience who is familiar with The Threepenny Opera will have plenty of surprises because of the imaginative execution of the text and songs. The production is co-directed by Jenny Sealey and Peter Rowe featuring a cast of 17 actor musicians including Deaf actor Stephen Collins who you may remember as Colin from Graeae’s Reasons to be Cheerful.
