Overview

Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and The Royal Hospital for Children both have Changing Places toilets. I only visited the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital one on this occasion and my main issue is that it was hard to find despite the signs. I saw the first two signs and then missed the third and was almost at the exit again looking for the next one before turning around and spotting it on the way back. When you come in through the main entrance, go straight past the escalators and reception and then turn left after The Soup & Juice Co. Go down the corridor and look for a gap in the temporary walls on your left to find a smaller corridor with a wooden door to the Changing Places toilet at the end of it. I found the bathroom to be clean and well kept. It's important to note that it is lit only by blue light, which is much less bright than the rest of the building and might make it hard to see for some.

Transport & Parking

2.5

I usually drive, but the most recent time I visited I took the bus and it made a big difference to not have to try and find a parking spot! There are several bus stops right next to each other outside the front entrance to the main building (where the Changing Places toilet is located). Bus lines include: 8, 16, 17, 23, 25, 34, 77, 189, 190. There is also a drop-off area next to the bus stops off Hospital Boulevard. If you have to park, one of the multi-storey carparks are probably your best bet, as the other parking lots are quite small and busy and the bigger one at the corner of Renfrew Road and Langlands Drive (P4) is for staff only. The multi-storey off Langlands Drive (P2) has several rows of blue badge parking on the ground floor and six electric charging station per level. (The upper levels are designated staff only.)

Access

Most, if not all, of the hospital and grounds is accessible via step-free routes, with ramps and lifts in the multi-storey carparks and plenty of lifts in the hospital itself. The Changing Places toilet is on the ground floor and level access from outside the main building. If the doors are not already open, there is a door open button for the power-assisted door on the right side of the main entrance. The building and the grounds are quite big, though, which makes it difficult if you cannot walk very far. There are a few benches between P2 (multi-storey) and the main building and many more between P4 and the building. There are also often hospital wheelchairs left around the multi-storeys and by the bus stops, which is not a policy, so no guarantee, but can be helpful if you don't have your own wheelchair and have someone with you who can push you along.

Toilets

The door to the Changing Places toilet opens to the outside with a lever door handle. It is not automatic. It is wide enough for my powerchair (62 cm) and a second panel can be opened to add about a foot to the width of the doorway. The look is a simple twist lock below the handle. Facing you as you come in, is a wall-mounted fold-down adult-size changing bench with a remote control to adjust height. There is a ceiling hoist track with a remote control above it and a hand shower on the wall to the right of it. The shower is controlled by two large twist knobs. There is a vertical handrail as part of the shower unit. There is a long red cord with handles in the middle and at the bottom to the right of the shower unit. As you turn left, a large foot pedal bin and the toilet will be to your right and another large foot pedal bin, the sink and a smaller foot pedal bin will be to your left. There is also a long mirror on the wall ahead. The toilet has a cushion backrest, two foldable horizontal handrails supported by vertical stands at either side and two vertical handrails on the wall at either side. The flush is a lever set into the wall and the toilet paper is in an individual sheet dispenser high up on the wall behind the toilet to the right (as seen from sitting on the toilet). There is space for both left-side transfer and right-side transfer. There is a long red cord with handles in the middle and at the bottom to the right of the toilet. The sink is not height-adjustable. It is a large wall-mounted sink with motion-sensor activation. There is a soap dispenser on the wall above the left side of the sink and a paper towel dispenser on the wall above the right side of the sink. Both are a good bit higher up than the sink itself. There is a long red cord with handles in the middle and at the bottom to the left of the sink.

Staff

I did not interact with staff on this occasion. There are usually volunteers opposite the reception who I imagine would be able to show you the way.
