Overview

We visited this museum as part of a day in Scalloway. The museum is modern and well designed. Wheelchair access is good.

Transport & Parking

3

We arrived by motorhome. There is a small car park with one or two accessible spaces but not suitable for a longer vehicle. We were also having lunch at Da Haaf restaurant (see separate review) so we parked near there and walked into Scalloway. The only issue with walking there is that the museum is on quite a steep hill and pavements are sketchy.

Access

5

Once inside, the museum is all on one level, with a good surface and plenty of space to move around. The exhibits are clear and easy to access, with good information boards to explain what they are. There is an outdoor area, with boats and other marine equipment - worth a look.

Toilets

4

There is one accessible toilet, just inside the entrance. It was clean and functional. There are more toilets part way round but these are not accessible.

Staff

5

All staff were lovely. They were polite, friendly and helpful.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

There is a fantastic exhibition that tells the story of the Shetland Bus operation. This was a covert operation, out of Scalloway, taking supplies and rescuing people from Norway whilst under Nazi occupation during WW2. The story is amazing! There is also a memorial, just around the harbour, near their original base and slipway.
