Fantastic wheelchair access

5

Visit date:

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Powerchair

Overview

Every shop I went in to was wheelchair accessible & there are lifts to take you up to higher levels, there is even a set of steps which at the touch of a button turn in to a platform lift! It's always on my list of places to go when I go to Hull!

Transport & Parking

I didn't park at the designated parking fir the centre, but parked elsewhere & 'walked' round in my powerchair.

Access

Wheelchair access is fantastic. I could access every shop I went in to in my powerchair & was able to get on to every level using one of the two lifts I saw (I don't know if there are any more) the lifts although not massive, were big enough for me in my powerchair + 1 friend, but could easily have got another one or two people in the lift with us.

Toilets

On the ground floor there is one changing places loo & 2 regular disabled access loos. These are clearly signposted. I love that to access these toilets you need a radar key, so there is less chance of the facilities being abused by people who don't need them. The disabled access loos are on the way to the regular loos, which is great as you can 'walk' to the loos with the person you've gone with, rather have to find a separate facility. On this visit there was a queue so I did have to wait a few minutes. There was a cleaner/attendant outside monitoring the loos & they were able to unlock the door for a wheelchair user who didn't have a radar key with them. When she beckoned me over to the first free cubicle for me to use, I got in there to discover that there was feaces on the toilet seat so I turned straight round & went out. The attendant asked what was wrong & I said the toilet seat is.... & before I could think of a polite way to describe what i'd seen, she said "messy?" Yes! Messy, thank you, and she went straight in there and cleaned it very thoroughly & without fuss! The toilets while not massive, are big enough for me to turn around in my powerchair. There was plenty of loo roll & the soap dispenser had soap in. The hand drier was super quick too.

The attendant at the loos I described earlier was friendly, without being over the top & incredibly efficient & seemed to be keen to offer a good service.

Totally recommment St Stephens! It is also worth mentioning the rather special feature on the top floor. To get to the Zizzi pizza restaurant on the top floor, when you come out of the lift & head over to the right towards Zizzi you are confronted with steps - about 4 I think. But, at the right of these steps is a fantastic invention.... at the push of a button the steps turn in to a platform lift. I actually went up especially to try this platform lift out as I'd heard about it in a wheelchair group I'm in on FB! We had something to eat & drink at the Bagel Nash stand on the ground floor which has a seating enclosure right to the side for their customers. This seating area is quite snug actually, and I could only really sit at one of the two tables just as you enter the enclosure. A friend moved a chair for me to sit close to the table & there wasn't really anywhere obvious to leave the spare chair. But if that's the only niggle then I think the centre is pretty darn good!
