St James Mount and The Gardens

    About

St James Mount and The Gardens is a secluded, Grade I listed historical site located on the edge of Liverpool city centre, right beside the Anglican Cathedral. Originally a stone quarry and later a cemetery, these sunken gardens now offer a tranquil oasis of peace. Visitors can explore a unique landscape featuring stone arches, broad ramps lined with catacombs, and a natural spring. The site is ideal for a quiet stroll, birdwatching, or taking in the impressive views of the cathedral and the historic Victorian monuments that define this hidden gem.

    Accessibility Highlights

According to the local council and historical records, the gardens feature a system of broad ramps originally designed for carriages, which provide routes through the sunken area. While some parts of the site include steep slopes or uneven grassy patches, the main walkways are generally level concrete or block paving. There are no public toilet facilities directly within the gardens, but accessible toilets are available a short walk away at Liverpool Cathedral. Nearby paid accessible parking is located on Upper Duke Street, and local bus routes 82, 86, and 82A stop in the immediate vicinity.
