If you want a glimpse into Orkney's Natural History and Maritime Past, or to study it in more detail, Stromness Museum is a must. Since 1837 the museum has amassed a unique and fascinating collection which celebrates local history and some of the remarkable Orcadians who made history elsewhere. Learn how to survive in the arctic through displays about Dr John Rae, Sir John Franklin and the Arctic Whalers. Find out about local connections with The Hudson Bay Company and the Canadian Fur Trade. On show are artefacts salvaged from the German Fleet, scuttled in Scapa Flow in 1919, in sight of Stromness. There aredisplays on lighthouses, sailmaking and ferries. The refurbished Victorian Natural History Gallery has a magnificent bird collection complemented by displays of eggs, fossils, sea creatures, mammals, butterflies and moths. The museum retains its Victorian character, visitors often comment on the 'cabinet of curiosity' feel of the museum. Tickets last 7 days!
