Overview
I visit the Traverse a couple of times every year, yet I always forget to review - not this time! Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen have been here, and they’re almost always productions that really push the boundaries of theatre convention.
Transport & Parking
Parking in Edinburgh is always a challenge, especially before a show. The nearby Blue Badge spaces tend to fill up quickly. There are 3/4 Blue Badge spaces available right outside the Traverse (depending on how close together people park). That said, the Traverse is well-served by public transport. Waverley Station is within walking distance, and there’s a bus stop right outside Usher Hall, just next door.
Access
Disabled access at the Traverse is excellent. It’s easy to get to all performance spaces, and there’s an accessible toilet near the bar. Staff are always aware of access needs. They keep an eye out for everyone that they know has access needs, and take people with access requirements down to the performance venue in batches. The bar area has a mix of seating, including high tables and lower ones suitable for wheelchair users. It’s fairly dimly lit overall, though there are some well-lit areas. Depending on the theatre’s setup, you’re usually seated either at the very front or in the middle section. Both offer fantastic views. I’ve included a picture of the view from the front row of my most recent visit below.
Toilets
The accessible toilet is good and reasonably spacious. The only drawback is that there are two bins placed right next to the toilet, which could get in the way if you transfer from that side. The red cord is hanging freely, and has a Euan's Guide card hanging on it already. Otherwise, everything’s well thought out: the sink is at a good height, there’s a full-length mirror (a nice touch), and the hallway leading to the toilet has an automatic door. The main toilet door swings outwards, giving you plenty of space. The whole area is well-lit.
Staff
The staff at the Traverse are consistently excellent. To book accessible tickets, you need to call, and the team is always friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. In person, they let you know who the steward is if you might need assistance, and they never rush you. They’re calm and attentive before and after the show, which really helps if you’re arriving a bit later or need more time to get settled. I’ve never had a bad experience with staff here.
