Our Review Coordinator, Claire, takes us along on her relaxing weekend away at Homelands Trust's Emsdorf Lodge, Fife.

I was recently invited to spend a few days at Emsdorf Lodge at Homelands Trust in Fife to review the accessibility of the accommodation. As someone who values accessible travel and understands the importance of finding accommodations that genuinely meet the needs of disabled guests, I was looking forward to seeing what Homelands had to offer.

About Homelands Trust

Homelands Trust is a Scottish charity based in Lundin Links, Fife, providing fully accessible self-catering holiday accommodation for disabled people, their families and carers. The trust operates nine purpose-built lodges designed with accessibility at the heart of every stay, helping people enjoy a relaxing break without the usual barriers that can come with travelling.

Each lodge has level access, widened doorways, a ground-floor accessible bedroom, a profiling bed, ceiling tracking hoists and a spacious wet room. Additional specialist equipment can also be borrowed free of charge, making holidays more accessible and enjoyable for guests with a wide range of needs. The lodges are located close to local amenities, beaches and the beautiful Fife Coastal Path, providing a fantastic base for exploring the area.

First impressions

Emsdorf Lodge is a spacious three-bedroom lodge sleeping up to six people and is also dog friendly. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that accessibility had been carefully considered throughout the design.

The ground floor features a large open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with wide circulation space, making it easy to move around. The accessible bedroom includes an electric profiling bed with an airflow mattress, a ceiling tracking hoist and direct access to both the living area and the patio. The wet room is particularly impressive, offering generous space, a level-access shower and ceiling hoist coverage between the bedroom and bathroom. The lodge also benefits from wide doorways, level access throughout the ground floor and a lowered breakfast bar in the kitchen that can be used comfortably by wheelchair users.

Settling in

After arriving and unpacking on Friday, we quickly made ourselves at home. One of the advantages of self-catering accommodation is being able to settle into your own routine, so our first evening was spent making homemade pizzas and enjoying a relaxed dinner together.

Once we'd eaten, we took the dog for a walk around the local area. Lundin Links is a lovely place to go for a walk, and it was the perfect way to start the weekend before returning to the lodge for a quiet evening.

A slow start to the weekend

Saturday morning was spent baking a red velvet cake and a carrot cake. Having a spacious and well-equipped kitchen made this easy, and I loved that I was able to help with the lowered kitchen island that

Later, we headed out for a pub lunch in Upper Largo, it was a lovely restaurant/bar serving delicious food.

In the evening, we played Colour Brain by Big Potato and enjoyed a mezze board for dinner.

Making the most of Sunday

The morning started with baking fresh scones before welcoming family members who had travelled from Dundee to visit us. It was lovely being so close to my home so family could come and have a nosey around the lodge.

We enjoyed a traditional Sunday roast dinner enjoying the lodge before spending the evening playing UNO. As the weekend began to draw to a close, we packed some of our belongings ready for heading home the following day.

One thing I particularly appreciated about staying in an accessible lodge was the flexibility it provided. Before going to sleep, we moved the profiling bed I was using into the living room so that I could watch Hairspray in comfort. It was the perfect way to round off a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Final thoughts

Our stay at Emsdorf Lodge demonstrated exactly why Homelands Trust has built such a strong reputation within the accessible travel community. The lodge combines practical accessibility features with comfort, space and a genuine holiday atmosphere.

Too often, accessible accommodation can feel clinical or compromised, but Emsdorf strikes an excellent balance between functionality and luxury. The thoughtful design, specialist equipment and welcoming environment make it possible for disabled guests and their families to enjoy a break together with fewer worries and more opportunities to focus on making memories.

From baking cakes and family visits to dog walks and game nights, our weekend was filled with simple pleasures - and having accessible accommodation that truly works made all the difference.
