Euan MacDonald Centre for MND Research

    Powering breakthrough research

Driven by a deep desire to support future breakthroughs in MND research, Euan co-founded the Euan MacDonald Centre for MND Research at the University of Edinburgh in 2007 alongside his father, Donald.

    The Centre's mission is to:

    • undertake research into MND, both laboratory-based and patient-centred projects. This includes the MND-SMART clinical trial, which is the largest-ever clinical trial in MND in the UK.
    • deliver training for the next generation of MND research leaders, including offering bespoke PhD studentship awards,
    • provide a network for those involved in MND research across Scotland,
    • work with Scottish healthcare professionals and other charities to increase awareness of MND and MND research among the public,
    • make discoveries that will slow, stop and eventually reverse MND.

It is not just about science – it is about giving people hope.

The aim of the Euan MacDonald Centre is, through research, to improve the outcomes for people living with motor neuron disease (MND) and related conditions.

The Centre has become one of the UK’s leading hubs for MND research, bringing together hundreds of scientists, clinicians, and people with lived experience of the disease to drive progress in treatment, care, and ultimately, the search for a cure.

Today, it takes too long to make the diagnosis, there are no truly effective treatments, and clinicians are unable to offer individualised prognosis. The Centre is working in all these areas.
