Overview

Really enjoyed our visit - much more interesting than many other stately homes I've visited - not so much history as living history & great to see estate continuing to be important to the local community. Holkham Hall is undergoing redevelopment when we visited so please check for latest information. Accessibility generally great - but please see specific note re stairs in the main house.

Transport & Parking

Blue Badge holders are able to park right at the entrance to the house. Again as with other attractions in the area driving is definitely encouraged as public transport might be tricky.

Access

Holkham Hall is made up of the Hall plus its grounds, cafe and shop. You can have a great time doing either or both! There is a lot of renovation work going on at the moment and all the temporary structures that have been put up for cafe & shop were solid and wheelchair accessible. One thing definitely to note is the stairs at the entrance for the main hall. There are about 10 steps that need to be navigated before you can look around the house. They do have rather an ingenious 'stairclimber' machine that either you can transfer to or it can be attached to many other manual wheelchairs - however it's not suitable for powerchairs and it might not be suitable for all manual wheelchair users. They do also have a 'spare' manual wheelchair that they let people borrow. Apart from this the rest of the tour round the house is step free.

Accessible loo is located outside a short distance away from the Hall.

Staff

Very helpful staff on hand to welcome you. The chap who operates the stair climber particularly helpful. The rest of the staff that we spoke to were all very knowledgeable about their own areas of the house.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Apart from the historical origins of the house and its artefacts what was particularly interesting to me was the recent (ish!) history and correspondence from the First World War. Also very interesting to see pictures of current staff and the family that currently lives there.
