Sightseer - Chapter 5

A walk by the burn

Barry Mill, National Trust for Scotland, is a working watermill near Carnoustie. The mill sits in a valley aside the burn and is open during the summer months. You can even meet the Miller and see the grain being milled on Sundays.

Transport & Parking

Parking is in the car park at the top of the valley. A short pathway takes you down to the mill from the car park. If you can't manage the incline you can park by the bridge over the burn alongside the mill if you get in touch before arrival. A bus stops in the nearby village but it would involve a walk to the mill.

Getting from the car park down to the mill involved walking along the pathway and going downhill. Distance wise it was around 80 metres and the gradient not too steep. Once down on the level around the mill you can go down to the side of the fast flowing burn and enjoy the views, sit on the grass and even take a picnic, and when you're ready venture in to the mill. As a wheelchair user you can explore the ground floor and get a great sense of the milling process.

There are toilets on site and these include an accessible toilet.

At the time of our visit the mill was closed so we did not meet any staff.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

A great place to visit and enjoy the countryside, the peace and tranquility as well as the bubbling burn. I liked it so much I will be going back in the summer for a second look and hopefully meet the Miller !
