Outdoors - Chapter 4

Packed day out, fantastic access

4.5

Overview

Free mobility scooter hire (there are wheelchairs too, all need advance booking at busy times) made this visit great. The Motor Museum was unexpectedly great with fantastic access - just a few tiny parts I couldn't reach. The restaurant is fully accessible, right down to an automatic door. Palace House is only partly accessible but they make up for this with a handheld DVD player that gives you a guided video tour. Staff throughout were amazing.

Transport & Parking

I have no idea if the bus goes here - we drove. There's plenty of Blue Badge parking quite near - though not right outside - the entrance.

Access

4.5

The Motor Museum is highly accessible - ramps, lifts to get you to all three levels. All displays were at the right height for me in the borrowed mobility scooter. The scooter I had on free hire was brilliant - easy to operate after a short teach in from the staff, who helped me into it and safely stored my own wheelchair. I've deducted half a star for the tiny areas I couldn't access. These were frankly insignificant though. Palace House had the brilliant DVD for me, with two helpful staff in costume who helpfully gave me lots of extra information. The grounds had nice even paths. The restaurant had a clearly marked sloping path taking me to the automatic doors. Plenty of room in Museum, House and restaurant (plus Top Gear and other displays) to turn a scooter or wheelchair.

Toilets

There were disabled loos at various places across the site. The one I used inside the restaurant was clean, well equipped and spacious: that one was radar key operated (though the staff unlocked it on request).

Staff

Staff in the ticket office/shop, Motor Museum and Palace House were all exemplary. Help was offered by so many.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

This was a second best rainy day activity but we actually really loved it. There was a concessionary rate for myself and carer but it was still very expensive. However we had about six hours enjoyment for this, including free scooter hire so it felt like we got a lot for our money.
