Overview

Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof is an open air museum with historic farm buildings that have been moved there from all over the Black Forest, as well as farm animals. Due to the age and style of the buildings, only some of them are accessible with a wheelchair, but it's still worth a visit.

Transport & Parking

4.5

You can get to the museum by bus and car, and it also has a small train station. We got there by car. The museum is situated by a main road so it is easy to get there and there are several disabled parking spaces.

Access

3

The visitor centre, shop and restaurant were all wheelchair accessible without any steps and there was enough room to maneuver. The outside paths around the site were gravelled and any paths that featured steps had an alternative route that I could take. The buildings themselves were more difficult to access due to the age and style of the buildings (traditional farm buildings), often with significant thresholds. Although some effort had been made to make them accessible, ramps could have utilised in some places to make more of the buildings accessible on the ground floor. I had help from my family to get into some of the larger buildings, and once inside there was enough room to get around and the doorways were wide enough for my wheelchair. There was a more modern building that housed an exhibition, an apartment as it would have looked in the 1980s and a disabled toilet. These were all situated on the upper floor and although there was a lift in this building, it was not functioning at the time of our visit.

Toilets

4

There were two disabled toilets on the site, however one was inaccessible due to a lift not working. The other toilet was situated in the visitor centre. It was a reasonable size and had grab rails and a suitable bin, but the changing table got in the way a bit as it didn't appear to fold. The room was quite clean.

Staff

4.5

The staff were all helpful and friendly. Although we spoke in German to them, members of staff appeared to speak a number of languages including English.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The food in the restaurant was very good!
