Delicious food, tricky wheelchair access

Overview

Before arriving in Leeds, I researched some vegetarian restaurants and was pleased to find one so close to the train station. So Bundobust became my first meal in Leeds and I did not even have to have another one until the next day, because I was so full of delicious food. The mango lassi was all I needed to be happy, so I did not have any of their beers this time, but I was certainly intrigued by the selection of pints from their own brewery. If you can never decide on just one thing, this might be just the place for you, since the menu recommends to get three small plates, one from each category, which are designed to complement one another. It is mostly Indian street food with some Indian/Mexican fusion and a wide variety of drinks. It is always nice to be at a vegetarian restaurant and not having your choices already narrowed down to a few vegetarian options and there were a number of vegan options as well. It was all yummy, but my favourite were the okra fries. The decor is a cool shabby chic with the panelling being made from old doors in different colours that are patchwork together.

Transport & Parking

Bundobust is just a short walk or wheel from Leeds station and the Station/Trinity bus stops on Boar Lane. there are a few disabled parking spaces not far away on Lower Basinghall Street, but otherwise no opportunities for on-street parking. The paid multi-storey car park for Trinity is also close-by.

Access

There are two narrow front doors leading into a tight entryway with another door into the restaurant. Most of the seating as well as the bar and toilets are up three steps from the entrance. There are handrails on either side of the stairs. The restaurant has a little portable ramp to bridge the step up at the front doors. (The step on the left door is shallower than the one on the right as the street is on a hill.) There is no good line of sight into the restaurant because of the entryway and many decals on the glass doors, so getting the attention of a member of staff to get the ramp is a bit difficult. The downstairs area has two large and four medium-sized tables with booth-style seating on one side and moveable metal stools without back or armrests on the other side. The music was mostly instrumental and quite rhythmic. I enjoyed it, but U would have liked it to be a little quieter. It was not overwhelming to me, though. There are not alternative formats for the menus.

Toilets

The toilets are at the back of the restaurant, up three steps from the area at the front that was accessible via the ramp, so I did not go to see them. One of the staff members told me that their toilets were sadly not wheelchair accessible when I came in and that there was a nearby pub that had accessible toilets. I did not remember the name and when I asked another server later, they were not sure which pub they meant, so this does not seem to be universal advice/knowledge. Leeds station is not far away, though, and if you have a RADAR key, you can use the accessible and Changing Places toilet there.

Staff

The staff was friendly and patient with me trying to navigate the narrow entryway. They were happy to answer my questions and took my order at the table, even though you were supposed to order at the bar. It was, however, not easy to get their attention from the outside and I had to take the initiative to ask strangers to go inside and ask about a ramp. While I was in the restaurant, police barricaded the street it was one and staff were then understandably distracted as they tried to figure out how still to fulfil their delivery orders.
