Overview
Calton hill is one of Edinburgh’s many hills. Sitting at the East end of the city the climb up to the top, aided by a tarmac road, is worth it for the spectacular views across the cityscape. It’s one of those iconic places where you instantly recognise the spot where so many people have paused for a moment to grab a selfie with the castle and the town’s skyline forming the backdrop.
Transport & Parking
You can walk up to the top of Calton Hill but it is fairly steep and maybe only for the more enthusiastic walkers. If you happen to have a Blue Badge you can drive to the top of the hill and park at the top. You gain access via the service road on Regent Road and slowly drive up the single track road as it winds its way up the hill. If you’re a powerchair user like me then you can actually wheel up the hill this way just taking your time. There are plenty of points along the way where you can pause for a rest or simply take a photo or two.
Access
Once at the top there are several paths to choose from. Be careful though as many paths descend down the hillside. Handily, there’s a path that goes around the top of the hill and the various monuments so you can get a full 360 degree view across the city with everything from seaward views, Easter Road Stadium, the Parliament, the Castle and the iconic glimpse of Princess Street. It’s best to go during daylight hours as there isn’t any street lighting on the hill.
Toilets
If you visit Calton Hill during daylight hours you can pop in The Collective, which is the old observatory on top of the hill, where you will find accessible toilets as well as refreshments and a fascinating place to explore the artwork and exhibits too.
