Cardiff Bay Railway Station
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Walking Aid, Wheelchair
Overview
Operational since 1840, this small single-line station is a five-minute walk from the bay for which it's named. The station's claim to fame is that its office was designed by the renowned civil engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This station provides a regular shuttle service to and from Cardiff Queen Street, with trains running every 12 minutes during the week. There were ongoing works to extend the station during my visit. I understand this will add a second platform and allow for more services, rather than just the singular shuttle service.
Transport & Parking
There is no dedicated parking at this location. However, it is served by a bus stop just outside, where you'll find the 1 City Circle, 1A, and Sky bus services in operation. The closest car park can be found at the Red Dragon Centre, 320 metres away, where you can park for free for up to six hours.
Access
There's a concrete ramp at the entrance leading up to the platform, but the ramp is well-worn, with sections chipped away by the elements and footfall. I was able to manage the ramp when self-propelling in my wheelchair, despite the condition of the concrete. To the right of the ramp is a grab rail to help those who find inclines difficult, and metal seats are available should you need a rest when you get to the top. The ticket machines are accessible from a seated height, but they don't feature Braille buttons. There is, however, a hearing loop and a headphone jack on each of the two machines. An induction loop is also in use on the platform. Unlike most stations, there is no tactile paving at the platform edge, which is concerning. The ramps are stored on board the train, so it may be better to arrange assistance ahead of time if you're able.
