    Far from electrifying

    Date of visit: February 2026

I am a disabled person. I have experience of challenges around: a hidden impairment, accessing toilets and moving around.

I use or have experience of: changing places toilet, disabled toilet, hidden impairment, powerchair, toilet with hoist, toilets, walking aid, wheelchair

If I was to offer a positive, it’d be that the EV charging bays are a generous size, but that’s about it. What could be a great facility is let down by an unusual design and awkward placement.

On my vehicle, the charging port sits at the back on the driver side. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem, but because my wheelchair lives in the boot, it means I have to reverse into the bay. I then had to partially reverse, get out of the car, remove my wheelchair from the boot, leave it outside the car, get back in the car, finish reversing, then transfer into my chair again just to connect the cable - quite the ordeal. The second issue is the choice to install a large kerbed, tarmacked section on either side of the unit. The kerb lifts the charger higher than it needs to be and pushes it further back. Add a metal barrier at the front and the whole thing becomes even harder to reach when you’re using a mobility aid. A real collaboration of poor design.

I travelled to this place by personal vehicle

The car park has twelve standard bays, one designated accessible space and two EV charging bays. The single accessible bay doesn’t have hatched markings at the sides or the rear. Instead of paint, the bays are outlined with brickwork, which makes for a rather unusual looking wheelchair user symbol. This terminal supports CHADEMO 50 kW, CCS 50 kW and Type 2 43 kW charging – however the Type 2 only gave me 11kw - luckily I wasn't in a hurry.
