Overview

Costa Martiánez or Lago Martiánez as it's also known by, is a large open-air swimming pool leisure complex. There is a lake and several outdoor swimming pools, restaurants, snack bars and bars. There are impressive views of the sea and Mount Teide. This is so much more than your regular lido complex as was designed by César Manrique, a local artist from Lanzarote, there are lots of eye catching things to see as he has used traditional Canarian architecture and native flora, its a place to explore as well as swim or sit and relax. Given that the complex recently celebrated its 40th anniversary it has impressive step free access round most the complex and there is a designated area for disabled people next to a step free entrance to one of the pools.

Transport & Parking

Costa Martianez is directly on sea front. The area immediately surrounding it is padestrianised and level and there are a handful of hotels and restaurants opposite it. When I visited I got a taxi to McDonald's and it was a level, couple of minutes walk from there.

Access

Overall impressive. There appears to be 2 or 3 entrances to the complex. Look out for the small, white ticket offices, at standing height. I went to the first one I came to and it only had stairs, with a hand rail and the person suggested I might want to use the 2nd entrance along as it had ramp and stairs access. There is a sculpture called Barlovento, just by the entrance. I have posted a photo of the step free entrance, so you know what to look out for. When I visited there were no queues. If you use the step free entrance there is a special area reserved for disabled people almost immediately in front and a step free, sloping entrance to one of the pools. It was here I saw the aqua wheelchair, which I also photographed. The complex itself is very large and spacious. There are about 7 pools to swim in, I think the majority of the pools are accessible by steps without hand rails. There are lots of ramps as well as stairs to access the main areas and facilities. However there are some terraced areas which are only accessible by steps without handrails, however, with my crutch I found these managable. The island bar is only accessible by crossing a small bridge with 2 steps up and then 2 steps down, the bridge is made of planks of wood so I had to position my crutch so it didn't get caught in the gaps.

Toilets

The toilets and changing room area are located on the inland side and are accessible by ramp or stairs. The accessible toilet was a little tricky to find as it wasn't signposted, but it is next to a restauarant (which I think was called Los Alisios, but I've taken a photo of the entrance). The accessible toilet is spacious and clean with grab rails on both sides of the toilet. I didnt go swimming when I was there so I'm unable to comment about the changing rooms.

Staff

Staff are friendly and everyone spoke English. When I arrived at an entrance which was not step free they let me know there was a step free entrance. I asked if there were chairs as well as sunbeds and I was told there is only sunbeds but there are chairs at the cafes. When I got into the complex one of the members of staff was very proactive he offered me a chair and chatted to me and suggested I walk by the sea wall and look at the waves.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

This place is amazing. It looks beautiful and it's also accessible. When I visited in 2018 it cost 5.50 euros to enter and that includes a sunbed. If you want to hire a parasol there is an additional charge. There are several restaurants/ snack bars and the costs are very reasonable. It's a place you can go and relax and spend all day there. I didn't go swimming when I was there but I fell in love with the place and I would very happily return again, many times.
