Reviewer of the Year - 2015

Easy arriving, not quite so straightforward departing

3.5

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Wheelchair

Overview

Five stars for arrival - the plane docked at a skybridge and a very helpful attendant soon arrived with our wheelchair and whisked us through passport control to the baggage reclaim area, and then on to the arrivals hall. Departure turned out to be more complicated.

Transport & Parking

4

We had arranged specialist transport - a fully wheelchair accessible vehicle - with a local firm, Haller-Mobil - http://haller-mobil.at/ - whom we would highly recommend. On the outward journey the driver was able to park very close to the entrance to the arrivals hall and deploy the ramp easily. Dropping off on departure was more complex - it seemed a much busier part of the airport and finding a parking space was more difficult for our excellent driver.

Access

3.5

Five stars for ease of access within the main terminals - ramps and lifts whenever needed. On departure, to get to Terminal 1A we had to cross a road in the open - not a problem provided you watch out for traffic and it isn't raining. The signage leaves quite a lot to be desired, especially on departure. The information desk in Terminal 1 was unmanned when we first stopped there, and the special assistance desk in Terminal 3 turned out to be specific to a particular airline (not ours) but we were more lucky on our second visit to the information desk, and were told to go to check-in.

Toilets

5

There are several, they are well-signed, reasonably spacious and equipped with grab rails and alarms. Importantly, on departure there are accessible toilets beyond security.

Staff

4

Excellent on arrival. On departure, very good once you found the appropriate person. The key thing is to find out where the check-in desk for your flight is and go there - special assistance then becomes available. When our departure gate was cleared for a security check on passengers' documentation we were exempted from this procedure, which was a relief. A wheelchair friendly vehicle got us from the departure gate to the plane, and then there was an ambulift. Easyjet's cabin staff get five stars for their patience and helpfulness.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

We gather that the City Airport Train to and from the city centre is quick and barrier-free. As we had quite a lot of luggage, we opted for the specialist taxi service mentioned above. Expensive (74 Euros each way) but excellent. There are no wheelchair accessible taxis at the airport or on ranks in the city centre, and we were told when planning the trip that taxi drivers will not agree to put a folding manual wheelchair in the boot. On departure, make sure you eat or drink before you go through security at the airport, beyond it there are only slot machines.
