This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Assistance Dog - Visual, Long Cane, Hidden Impairment

Overview

I had a two night stay at this wonderful Grade II listed building along with my guide dog. The owners and staff went out of their way to ensure our stay was perfect. The Owners (Ellie and Lynn) went out of their way from the moment I emailed them about attending their 2 day "Wild woman" retreat. They checked to see if I would need a walk in shower. They ensured that I knew what would happen in case of a fire alarm going off in the night. They escorted me around the building and outside so that i would know where all the facilities where. During meals time they offered to assist me so that I was aware of what food was available and then they carried it to the table for me whilst I looked after my dog. They even described where each item was on the plate and where my cutlery and drinks were placed. The lift even had a handle inside which was a different colour to the walls so it stands out and this is useful for those with visual impairments. My guide dog had an absolutely fabulous time as he was allowed to have free time roaming safely in the massive grounds and woodlands and I knew he would be safe as the grounds are completely enclosed and we were a distance from the main road. They also ensured that there were plenty of activities to participate on the retreat and alternatives were provided if you felt tired or just wanted to relax. The bed was so comfortable. Will I go back - most definitely - I'm already planning a second visit as the first was so good.

Transport & Parking

5

They have plenty of parking outside the guest house including two disabled parking bays. As this is in the far north of Scotland public transport (buses are limited) but on request they will stop outside the entrance to the estate (Very long drive). Wick train station is about 20 minute drive away. It is best to go by car if you intend to visit places in the local area as public transport is restrictive. Their is a ramp for wheelchair users or those with mobility issues to help enter the guest house and cafe/craft sales room.

Access

There is a lift with contrasting coloured support rails for those with visual impairments. As a Grade II listed building the walk in shower and toilet with support handle is in a room next to the bedroom. Landing and hallway lights are on throughout the night to ensure high visibility. Fire exit signs are lit up in neon green. Their is a ramp for accessing the building and doorways were wide enough for wheelchairs (I got through easily with my guide dog in harness). I was able to use a reading app on my phone to read notices. The numbers on the door were raised so I could outline the number plate to check I was at the right room. All staff willingly gave me help if I needed it. I didn't enquire if notices were available in Braille or large print as I personally do not use either (as I rely on my reading app).To be honest owners went out of their way to pre-empt my needs.

Toilets

All the toilets I used by the cafe and elsewhere in the guest house were fully accessible with my guide dog and had support handles. The bathrooms/toilets were very large and would easily allow a carer to come in with you.

Staff

The owners and staff went out of their way to make my stay perfect. You can just tell that Ellie. and Lynn (and no doubt their partners) put their heart and soul into making this guest house a welcoming place to visit. The owners intent is obvious in that it is run as "sustainably" as possible whilst maintaining it's Grade II characteristics - that means cherished older furnishings are used, lights are environmentally friendly as are the electricity and water supplies. This is a place to visit if you care about the environment and if you are not part of the "use and throw" class. As it is a Grade II building they have installed interior glazing to help keep the house airtight and warm without damaging the original windows. This guest house will still be standing in another 200 years as it is being conserved and restored with care.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Plenty of antiseptic pump action sprays dotted around the entrances, lifts and bathrooms. There are plenty of areas to explore without bumping into other people if you prefer to be alone. Rooms, bed linen, towels are clean - you can smell their freshness as you enter the rooms.
