Overview
I wanted to visit Fort Charlotte whilst we were in Lerwick, as I'm a big fan of Bridgerton and this fort was named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III. I knew it was going to be tricky getting in and hubby was on hand to help.
Transport & Parking
There is a small car park on a road beneath the fort but it was full when we visited and we were travelling by motorhome so couldn't have parked there anyway. We walked from town. The hill up to the entrance is so steep, I definitely wouldn't have managed without help. I'd have tipped over backwards!
Access
Once we got in, it was actually quite flat and I could get round okay. The main entrance though is terrible! There is a giant double door, which is closed and then one of the doors has a kind of hatch that you climb through. Hubby went through and then tried to open the main doors with a massive metal rod. If the purpose was to keep the place secure, it certainly would have worked! There was one area I couldn't access due to steps but the main cannons and views were pretty accessible. Next to the information board is a dropped kerb onto the grass. I found that helpful.
Toilets
There aren't any toilets. I think the nearest ones are on the harbour front.
