We continue our journey from Edinburgh, having visited Loch Lomond, travelled over RANNOCH MOOR, and a quick history lesson at Glencoe, and now continue to cross lovely open mountain scenery, mile after mile of wild open scenic views, which turned out to be a highlight for us, and arrived at Fort William, with its view across to Ben Nevis, Scotlands highest mountain. Fort William is now a main sightseeing small town, with its locks, Ben Nevis, and a reasonable High Street for shopping. The first fort here was built in 1654 following the Three Kingdoms war, after Oliver Cromwell’s invasion. Then renamed after 1688 as Fort William, after William of Orange, the now dual power of Britain along with his wife Mary 11; Daughter of King Charles 1st. William was a Dutch man, sovereign of Holland, who then ordered a new fort to be built here. The settlement grew, and renamed Maryburgh, after his wife, then renamed again as Duncansburgh, before finally named as Fort William this time after Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. Very popular climbing attraction, which pulls in 130,000 visitors a year. The summit is that of a collapsed volcano, and on the Photo, is the farthest peak you can see. Good
Nice and flat area, as is most of Fort William for disabled use.
Parking & Transport
Good
We suggest using Banavie car park, post code PH33 7PL, as this is close to the famous “Neptunes Staircase locks” on the Caledonian canal.
Accessible Toilets
Good
You may have to use “The Moorings Hotel” for toilets, but this will mean a coffee break or a wee dram The hotel is next door to car park.
