Guest House with disabled access, spacious ground floor rooms, ramp

Overview

This is a very welcoming Guest House. My 90 year old mother can walk a few yards with assistance, but uses mainly a wheelchair. There are two huge twin ground floor rooms, very nicely decorated and with enormous bathrooms. The bathrooms had shower cubicles, low level baths and low level sinks, with plenty of room to use a wheelchair if necessary. Although my mum was able to make the single flight of stairs to the breakfast room, there is the offer of having breakfast served in one's room if preferred. There is a ramp is to the separate rear entrance which leads to the main town square. The owners are extremely helpful.

Transport & Parking

There is usually parking space on the road outside the front entrance, but there is a car park across the churchyard, the latter of which has a good path across it suitable for a wheelchair. There is a disabled parking space opposite for unloading, but I believe it is a short stay parking space. Wheelchair users need to be aware that the main square in Kelso is cobbled, but there are paved areas to the side for wheelchairs.

Access

We were given a separate key for the rear entrance which has a ramp to the door from the main square.

Toilets

The bathroom is enormous so there is plenty of space for a carer, and there are grab rails in the bathroom. Re the actual shower: users would have to be able to get into the shower cubicle which is a standard size.

Staff

Staff are very helpful. The disabled access rooms (two enourmous twin rooms) are on the ground floor, of course, but breakfast can be served in the bedrooms for those unable to climb the flight of stairs to the breakfast room. Breakfasts are excellent. We did not require this service, but it was offered if we required it.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The Guest House is in the main part of town and we were able to visit all the eateries we wished by pushing my mum's wheelchair. Not all the eateries have proper disabled access (if any) so it is a good idea to do an earlier 'recce' of any you with to visit.
