Overview
The Galloway Hoard is on loan from the National Museum for Scotland till July 2022, to allow the people of Dumfries & Galloway where the hoard was discovered to view the collection. Beautiful old building , which has been upgraded with accessibility in mind. Loved having the opportunity to view it locally, without having to travel to Edinburgh. Doors throughout the building were very heavy though, no automatic doors, we would have struggled if using my manual chair. Roomy building with plenty of room to manoeuvre. Fabulous cafe on site, but felt tables were placed a bit close together to enable sufficient social distancing .Entrance is free, though you need to prebook a time slot, would advise doing this ahead as spaces are sold out quickly.
Transport & Parking
We travelled by car, no carpark, parking was street parking and we had to go around several times to get parked. There was an accessible parking space along from the galleries, but no drop down on the pavement. There are local bus services to Kirkcudbright
Access
Wide ramp to entrance As mentioned doors heavy, but staff helped us with them ( website does advise that doors are heavy, and to approach staff for assistance) Plenty of seating throughout the galleries for a rest All areas flat Lift to other floors, it was a bit strange, as you went in one door, but it opened to the side on the floor you wanted, so took a bit of manoeuvring Excellent signage throughout Did not notice an induction loop, but there was interactive information available via your smart device
Toilets
Roomy & clean, plenty of grabrails
Staff
Staff were excellent and very helpful
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Pre booked Time slots to limit people in the exhibition at any one time Clear signage, hand sanitising stations, mask wearing etc The only place I didn’t feel COVID safe was the cafe, tables were very close together
