I must admit, I was aware of the story of Lady Godiva, but somehow ignorant of the fact that her famous ride took place in Coventry. I really should read more closely. According to legend, Lady Godiva rode naked through the market to protest the hefty taxes her husband had imposed on the townspeople. Everyone stayed indoors out of respect, apart from a tailor named Tom, who sneaked a peek and lost his sight. This is where the phrase “Peeping Tom” comes from. The bronze Lady Godiva statue was sculpted by Sir William Reid Dick and unveiled in Broadgate, Coventry, on 22 October 1949.
Disabled Access In and Around
Average
There are benches around Broadgate, offering a handy spot to stop for lunch. The Lady Godiva statue is impressive to see, although there isn't much to report in terms of access features.
Parking & Transport
There are bus stops nearby, with Pool Meadow Bus Station around a five-minute walk away. Coventry Railway Station is further away, around a 15-minute walk. There are also city centre car parks with accessible parking nearby.
