    Date of visit: March 2026

I am a disabled person. I have experience of challenges around: accessing toilets, dexterity or coordination and moving around.

We visited this museum whilst on holiday in the Lake District. We spent almost 4 hours there, including a lovely lunch in the cafe. It was easy to get around in my wheelchair and my assistance dog seemed quite happy. Most of the museum is carpeted but it is not thick so was easy enough to wheel on. It did help with noise too. The route is well marked with arrows on the ground.

The entrance has a double door which is not automatic and opening just one door leaves it a little tight to get a wheelchair and assistance dog through. However, once inside, getting around was very easy. The surfaces are mostly thin carpet which was good for wheeling on. Ramps have been provided to get between sections and these are very gentle. There is a lift to the upper floor. It's a platform lift but quite long and it worked well. One thing to be aware of is that the museum welcomes all well behaved dogs on a lead. This didn't bother us, as my assistance dog is old now and not as easily distracted but in our early days, it may have been a bit stressful.

Accessible facilities: Lift to all areas, Step-free entrance, Seating at regular intervals

I travelled to this place by personal vehicle

The car park is opposite the museum and there is a designated accessible parking area, as well as some spaces right outside. We thought the accessible parking area was a bit tight, though we didn't have any problems. There were three spaces but no line markings, so it would depend on how others parked. From the car park, we crossed the road and then went down a slight ramp to the entrance.

    Accessible facilities: Dedicated on-site parking

    Accessible Toilets

There are two accessible toilets, one in the museum and one in the cafe. They were clean and big enough for my wheelchair and dog, but nothing special. The cafe toilet is also the baby change.
