Overview

The Pre-Raphaelite painter Sir Frederic Leighton designed this house with its strong Middle Eastern influences and decorated it with some fine Oriental artefacts, including tiles and tracery windows. It's a delight to visit for the Oriental features and the art. The drawbacks are lots of steps, poor light levels in places and its location. I went there with an organised coach party and we were dropped off in High Street Kensington and had a 10 minute walk to the house. The nearest Tube station is about 30 minutes gentle walk away so we were fortunate. There are two allocated parking spaces nearby for Blue Badge holders. The front door is up about 8 steps and there are steps and stairs within the house so it's not suitable for wheelchair users. For partially-sighted visitors it's quite hard work to move around and to see everything but, because I had a reliable companion who understands my needs, I enjoyed my visit.

There were two staff members, one at the desk and one moving through the house. I don't think they conrtibuted anything to our visit.
