The main reason I went to this particular branch of McDonald's is that it's directly across from the Berwick-Upon-Tweed Travelodge, where I happened to be staying. The experience was pretty much all I expected with little to write home about. Lets see how it scores for accessibility.

Disabled Access In and Around

Average

The venue is level throughout, with two sets of automatic sliding doors at the entrance. The pathway is well maintained; however, there is a lamp post that I had to squeeze past in my wheelchair. There is tactile paving at the crossing on approach to the entrance. Outdoor benches are available, while inside there are various seating options, including wooden chairs, soft-backed benches, and high stools with tables. Signage is minimal, but the route through the venue is clear, with enough space to move around using a wheelchair or powerchair. The order screens have an accessibility button, which brings the options lower down on the screen. I noticed some power sockets around the venue being used by visitors to charge their phones. The order counters are low enough for most wheelchair users, and this location also offers table service and drive-thru options. I didn’t see any indication of alternative formats.

I travelled to this place by personal vehicle

There are two accessible parking spaces in the car park and two EV charging bays. The spaces are only slightly larger than standard parking spaces, and payment is made by scanning the QR code on the machine. It does have support arms, which is a bonus. I drove to the nearby hotel and wheeled down, but there is a bus stop just across the street where the B1 and Berwick Hoppa services operate.

Accessible Toilets

Poor

The accessible toilet at this location is found in a corridor to the left of the order counter. The door to the corridor opens inwards, while the door to the accessible toilet opens out, which makes it a little awkward if someone opens the first door. Black and white signage is installed to the right of the door and includes Braille. This toilet is particularly small, with just enough room for a powerchair user or wheelchair user and a second person. However, there is a bin in the left-side transfer space, which pretty much makes it redundant, and the red cord was tied around a rail on the backrest of the toilet. I also had to move a wet floor cone out of the way to get in. The toilet has a soft backrest and white rails on either side, which contrast well against the black tiled wall. The small sink has a lever-style tap and contrasting grab rails on either side. A wall-mounted baby change unit is on the left wall. The toilet is functional to a point, but it’s frustrating that basic access is not a focus.

Good

The staff were personable, bringing food over without any issues. I also spoke to a cleaner who was very pleasant and asked about my day.
