Venue Description

Please note the mill is not currently operational. Prices have been reduced to reflect this. See a beautifully - restored village mill in action and learn about how oatmeal, a staple of the Scottish diet, was once made. A mill was built here by the monks of nearby Sweetheart Abbey but the present building dates back to the late 1700s. 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Daily, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) 1 Oct to 28 Mar: Fri & Sat, 10am to 4pm (last entry 3.30pm) We recommend booking in advance to guarantee entry.

Accessibility

Approach to site Approached by tarmac pavements. From the public car park the site is about 250m along the main village road. There is a slight downward slope nearing the mill. Visitor centre The visitor centre has step-free access from the rear of the mill. The entrance from the main village street is through a low doorway and uneven cobbled area. Monument An interpretive display is located on the ground floor. The video presentation room is reached up a set of 14 modern stairs with a handrail on one side. The mill is a separate building and reached over cobbled paths and through a narrow door. The upper mill floors are reached by historic steep wooden steps with rope handrails. Surroundings The garden at the rear of the mill has even access to the waterwheel. The main viewing area has three stone steps with no hand rails. Miller’s Field is part of the car park area and is uneven grassland with a fish pond. Benches are available. The mill pond can be accessed via a steep stone stair at one end of the mill building which can be slippery when wet. There is a hand rail on one side. Access can also be via the road at the rear of the mill and has a steep incline and is used by some heavy traffic. Special features Working demonstrations of the mill are given during the summer months. Please contact the site for information.
