Overview

This performance of the re-interpretation of Medea was a forum theatre musical and it was quite an experience. I loved the interaction between performers and the audience which gave it a fresh, intimate feel; we were greeted by one of the cast who left the stage in characteras we came in. It was a mad quest through the breakdown of a relationship, its consequences, an analysis of our culture and its parallels with Ancient Greece and Euripides' play. By portraying the play in this format it also faced you with our collective responsibility for the way women and children are treated in society. The performers' voices were really great, the compositions were both funny and moving and I loved the juxtaposition throughout of humour and sadness. The venue staff member who greeted me also made us feel very welcome.

Transport & Parking

This venue is in a church central Edinburgh on George IV Bridge and I managed to park in disabled parking around the corner on Chambers St. after the museum was closed. Before this became available we parked on a single yellow line on Guthrie St. but it was on a very steep slope. Car parking is hard to access especially during the festival; it took ages to find somewhere, also, nearby paying car parks are expensive with one charging £9.90 for 2 hours. There are lots of buses available to George IV Bridge or close by and Waverley station is about half a mile away.

Access

I asked a staff memeber at the door for a ramp to get inside and they quicly and very willingly provided this. It is a bit steep as it's such an old building and might be more challenging for manual wheelchair users and others with mobility issues but I managed ok in my powerchair; the staff were very willing to assist if needed. I was shown into the foyer and told that I would be taken into the performance space first in order settle into to the best seating area for me. I was taken down to the Studio in a ift and I was really impressed to see that the accessible seating is located near the back in a higher vantage point yet near the door if I needed to move out. I also had a great view but was still part of the audience.

Toilets

As there are only two toilets available in the venue that I could see and only one was accessible, there were a lot of people using both these toilets. The disabled toilet had a red cord, grab rails and was fairly clean and spacious.

Staff

The staff were all really helpful, welcoming and lovely. The staff member helping me inside returned to check that everything was ok and even sourced me a flyer, so big thanks for that. At the end of the performance he returned to make sure that I was able to exit ok and helped me out of the building again.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I couldn't see any hand sanitisers available, there were one or two people apart from us wearing masks in the audience. I loved being able to access this beautiful venue and I would return to see another show.
