Overview
Pizza Punks is especially popular with folks who struggle to find something suitable in a standard pizza line-up, thanks to their “create your own” offer that allows you to choose as many toppings as you like with no extra charge for vegan cheese or “meats”. Gluten-free bases cost an extra two pounds. If you are just as happy with a margherita, you can save a few quid and don’t worry if creating your own presents too many choices – there are some classic and some fun established combinations on the menu as well. You can round out your meal with sides and dessert, including vegan mac and cheese and vegan vanilla ice cream. While I’m not one of the people who isn’t served well with any old cheese pizza, I enjoyed getting a little adventurous with a vegan meatball marinara pizza and I was happy for my partner to not have to worry about whether there would be suitable vegan toppings. The atmosphere is relaxed and the not too loud music skews comfortingly in the direction of 2010 alt rock. It’s not too loud to have a conversation, but since it is a big open space, I imagine that it might get a little noisy when it is busier. It’s not very bright, but there are plenty of themed neon-signs, a confusing but bearable situation for me and my photosensitive migraines.
Transport & Parking
I was able to find street parking closeby with my blue badge. Keep in mind that the area is quite hilly, so even if you find parking not too far away, it won’t necessarily be a flat walk. The restaurant is just a few hundred meters away from both Glasgow Central and Queen Street stations. The closest subway station is Buchanan Street, which has escalators but no lifts. There are several bus stops on Renfield Street/West George Street/Union Street, which are served by many different bus lines.
Access
There are two shallow steps leading up to the double doors at the entrance. There is a foldable ramp that can be brought out. I didn’t visit with my wheelchair on this occasion and I am not sure how easily you would be able to get a staff member’s attention from outside if you were by yourself. There is a host station right next to the exit, so I would hope that it wouldn’t be too difficult. The walkways inside are generally wide enough to move through in a chair and most of the tables have chairs that can be removed to make space for a wheelchair user at the table. It seems to me, however, that sitting at some of the tables in a wheelchair might make the walkways a bit tight, so I recommend mentioning it when making a reservation. Some of the tables have barstools, so make sure to specify in your reservation if that is not suitable for you.
Toilets
The main toilets are in the basement down a flight of 15 steps and there is one more step up to the bathroom. There is a medium-sized accessible bathroom around the left corner in the bar area at the back. There is no door opener. There is a handrail on the back of the door and it looks with a twist lever. There is a horizontal handrail to the left of the toilet that can be lifted and moved out of the way and a fixed horizontal handrail on the wall to the right of the toilet. The flush is a lever. The toilet paper holder is to the right of the toilet. There is space for a right-side transfer. The red cord is to the left of the toilet. There are vertical handrails on either side of the sink. The sink is a small wall-mounted sink and the tap has a short lever. There is a liquid soap dispenser on the sink and a mirror above the sink. There is also a wall-mounted soap dispenser to the left of the sink. There is only a hand dryer, no paper towels. There is a wall-mounted baby change on the wall by the door that folds down. There is a bin to the left of the sink and to the right of the baby change that opens with a foot pedal, but there is also a groove to lift the lid up by hand.
